El ocio de la escritura

Escribir tiene mucho de ocio. No es muy diferente, a veces, a esa costumbre bastante sana de dibujar sin ton ni son cuando la mente está ocupada, sin mayor entusiasmo, en otro asunto cualquiera y las circunstancias obligan a permanecer quieto y atento en un mismo lugar, impedido de seguir los dictados impacientes del instinto a vivir libremente. Arte maravilloso el del ocioso dejar que la mano se entretenga en gesticular sus laberintos sin designio. Arte sin pretenciones del simple correr de la pluma sin prisa alguna, entretenida en el propio asombrarse de lo que va dibujando el trazo o verbalizando la desmadejada caligrafía. No siempre escribir implica un sesudo ir montando estructuras y abriendo camino en direcciones más o menos orientadas hacia la razón, el conocimiento y la experiencia espiritual profunda. Puede y debe el escribir darse también a veces como una gratuita forma del ocio, suerte de abandono al caprichoso y deleitoso "dolce far niente" que los clásicos, con práctica sabiduría, llamaban el ocio digno. Quienes tienen por oficio escribir necesitan de cuando en cuando relajarse y darle paso al placer de escribir por escribir. Los resultados pueden ser a veces sorprendentes.

Reading and writing

Somewhere I read some time ago the following asertion by Andrea Barrett: "Reading and writing are two of the ways we make sense of our mysterious, sometimes terrible, world." Now I stop to think why did I take note of this thought and why at this moment I am returning to it and devoting some time to consider its meaning. I suppose I am worried about those other ways of "making sense of the world" that are not writing and reading, as much as I wonder how much writng and reading has been done whose effect has been giving to the world an awful meaning. Now I realize that the citation is another of the many platitudes we write about writing while trying to make of it a very significant and serious activity. As most human endeavors, reading and writing are nothing but cunning forms of survival.
